You’ve seen this something snippet of Old Singapore, somewhere in your memory, at a somewhen you can’t quite place.
“Something, Somewhere, Somewhen” is Indie Singapore Tours’ latest feature (complete with a meet-the-artist session!) that invites you to remember the past. Through ten murals around Telok Ayer, Chinatown and Tanjong Pagar, see the artist’s life story unfold and get to know the Singapore we have left behind.
We were brought along a comprehensive and immersive three-hour journey by our friendly tour guide Eunice, who began with Yip Yew Chong’s most ambitious mural. The 44-metre long “Thian Hock Keng Mural 天福宫壁画” along Amoy Street was painted over 10 weekends while the artist was still juggling his full-time job and business trips.

Our personal favourite was “Cantonese Opera” along Temple Street which was a gift to the Cantonese community. It took Yip Yew Chong three years just to get the approval to paint on the building. Since it was a self-funded and self-initiated project, he collaborated with Community Chest to turn this into a fund-raising event in order to donate 100% of funds raised to five different charities.
Did you manage to spot it in our video?
