What are weekday nights and weekends for, if not for bingeing series after series on Netflix or Disney Plus? If you’re looking for something new to watch, we’ve got you covered with these exciting releases in March.
Bridgerton Season 2 (Netflix)
Bridgerton fans rejoice – the second season of this hit series is finally here! Before the unrivalled success of Squid Game in 2021, it held the title of Netflix’s most-watched original series, and there’s a high chance they’re reclaiming that crown.
Bridgerton is a period piece with a touch of modernity, centering on the wealthy Bridgerton family – a widow and her eight children. The series follows the eight siblings as they seek to find love in Regency era London. With a lavish set and costume design, coupled with a balanced dose of drama, comedy and suspense and a diverse ensemble cast, there’s little wonder how this series developed its cult following. Catch up on the previous season if you haven’t before the new season’s premiere on March 25.
Moon Knight (Disney Plus)
We’ve all been waiting for the next big Marvel production since Spider-Man: No Way Home’s release last December – and this is it. Award-winning actor Oscar Issac stars as Steven Grant, a seemingly unassuming gift shop employee who suffers from dissociative identity disorder (DID). He soon finds himself in a deadly Egyptian mystery where he has to navigate his complex personalities, one of which is the anti-hero Moon Knight. Fellow award-winning actor Ethan Hawke joins Issac as mysterious and villainous Arthur Harrow. Stream Moon Knight on Disney Plus from March 30 onwards.
Our Flag Means Death (HBO Max)
Comedy writers David Jenkins and Taika Waititi collaborate on this series, loosely based on the life of Stede Bonnet – a retired British army major who became a pirate in 1717. This story of this “Gentleman Pirate” isn’t really a smooth-sailing one, as Bonnet’s poor pirate skills and his well-to-do background soon make it a struggle for him to earn the respect of his crew. Released on March 3, this series is bound to keep you entertained with its effective blend of adventure and comedy.
Pieces of Her (Netflix)
Based on the 2018 novel of the same name, Pieces of Her is a thriller drama series starring Toni Collette and Bella Heathcote. The series follows Andy Oliver, a 31 year-old woman whose life changes overnight when she and her mother are caught in a brutal attack at a shopping mall. She begins to uncover fragments of her mother’s dark past upon witnessing the latter stop the gunman in a shockingly violent manner. This series takes on the difficult question of how well we truly know those around us, and presents it in a harrowing and provocative fashion. If you’re a fan of thrillers and suspense, this one’s definitely worth a watch. Pieces of Her is released on Netflix on March 4.
The Adam Project (Netflix)
This highly-anticipated sci-fi time travel film boasts a star-studded cast comprising Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana. The film follows Adam Reed (Reynolds), a fighter pilot in the 2050s who accidentally crash-lands on earth in 2022 and meets his 12-year-old self in the process. They team up, along with his late father (Ruffalo) in a mission to save the world. The Adam Project is released on Netflix on March 11.
Turning Red (Disney Plus)
Turning Red marks Disney Pixar’s latest coming-of-age animated feature, following the success of 2020’s Soul. The movie follows Meilin ‘Mei’ Lee, a confident teenager who turns into a giant Red Panda when she experiences strong emotions. While making sense of this sudden and bizarre transformation, she also learns to balance her desire for independence with her sense of obligation towards playing the traditional role of a dutiful daughter – a struggle commonly known as puberty. Family-friendly with meaningful life lessons to share about adolescence, this movie is perfect for movie night this upcoming school holiday! Stream Turning Red on Disney Plus from March 11 onwards.
West Side Story (Disney Plus)
Directed by Steven Spielberg, West Side Story is a retelling of the Romeo and Juliet-style musical. It tells the story of the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two rival gangs in New York City. Ansel Elgort stars as Tony, a Jet who falls hopelessly in love with Maria, played by up and rising star Rachel Ziegler, who happens to be the sister of the Puerto Rico Sharks’ leader. While their forbidden romance takes centre stage, West Side Story has also been lauded for its exemplary staging and performance, especially for its iconic musical numbers like “America”. Catch West Side Story on Disney Plus from March 2 onwards.
Worst Roomate Ever (Netflix)
This one’s for all of you True Crime junkies. Beyond its seemingly harmless or even humorous title, this 5-part documentary series features four victims who share about the violent, grotesque crimes committed by their roommates. We’re not talking about roommates who take your stuff without asking, or fail to make their beds, but conspiring con-artists and ruthless killers. Worst Roommate Ever is already available on Netflix.
